Lets make it happen guys! Lets get together this summer at my local Gun Club in South Berwick, Maine. Do a mapquest to find out how far it is, it's in very Southern Maine. There can be camping and RV parking on site, no hook-ups or indoor shower though. We have 2 trap fields, singles and doubles, a 0-50 yard range and a 12 station, covered shooting benched 50-100-200 yard range. We could have a lobster feed Saturday night. There is a cool gun store ( www.ktp.com ) about 5 miles away. There are shopping malls 7 miles away in NH w/o sales tax. There are beaches and light houses. You can take a evening sight seeing cruise on the Ocean with a local cruise company. Lets pick a month, I'm thinking late July or sometime in August. Then lets pick a weekend. Who's going? ~Clayt ------------------ I've stopped shooting fish, everyone in the boat is happier!

OK, I'm up for this. While I do punch a clock and have kids, the clock can be unplugged and Mom can deal with the kids for a weekend. However, the end of July is no good for me as the last weekend would be my girls B-Day Party.August 5-6, 12-13, or 19-20 are fine for me. MC, if you want, you could make the first leg of the trip here, and both continue up to Maine the next day. Clayt, is there any lodging in the area? I did a quick search and found a Super 8 Motel in Kittery, but the reviews did not look good. I figure you would know best as to what's available. ------------------

Sounds kewl. My time is my own. I had planned on making a trip to Maine this summer, having never been there. Is the ice out in august? Can I bring my box-a-year bro-in-law and his wife??

I'm doing some "research" about places to stay. I haven't been to any motels around here, as I wasn't a teenager around here! hehehe!I'm looking at traveliocity for Dover and Portsmouth NH. The Rod and Gun Club is located just about where the "236" circle is on that map. ~Clayt [Edited 1 time by Clayt on 01-09-2006 at 06:08 PM]

Greg, Not a bad place to stay, that rate looks pretty good too! A friend got married and his out of town guests stayed there. http://www.theportinn.com/ This place is good, but you'll have to call them for availbility and price, I'm getting conflictiong info on-line or try Econo Lodge Inn & Suites The fresh water fly fishing in this area is poor. You have to go 100+ miles North to find cooler water in July or Aug. The Stripers may be running if you want to try salt water flies. There are some charter boats that do Deep Sea bait fishing. What week-end is going to work for you? ~Clayt Greg: Fixed hyperlink [Edited 3 times. Last edit by Greg on 01-10-2006 at 08:59 AM]

Clayt, So far I'm looking at the first weekend in August (5th & 6th), but any of the weekends in August will work. The plan so far is this...MC1911 is going to come up to NY for the first leg of the trip. At around 3:00 AM on a Saturday morning we plan to head north. That should put us beyond Boston before the morning rush hour. Most hotel check-in times are after 2:00 to 3:00 PM so I guess we'll head straight up to South Berwick. We plan to stay over for two nights and head back home on Monday morning. The Days Inn looks pretty good from what I can see on their site. Comparing the rates to some of the other places up there, they are very reasonable. They also don't seem to be too far from South Berwick. Looking at the map I guess it to be about a 30 minute drive. What do you think? If the fresh water fly fishing isn't that good, he might try some salt water or jump on a charter boat. Being a fisherman also any kind of fishing is good for me, but this is a gun weekend. While he carries a duty firearm all day, he's not very big into shooting, especially rifles. He did show an interest in hunting and actually got his hunters safety certificate. I brought him to my club so he could try sighting in a 30-30 he just picked up second hand. This in itself was a very funny experience... He got his hunting license, got a rifle, a couple of boxes of factory ammo and I talked him through the basic range safety rules and to dry fire the rifle a couple of times just to get used to the trigger. The Win Model 94 trigger is a lot different than his Glock. When he was ready, I told him to go ahead and load the rifle and squeeze a round off (open sights target at 50 yards). He starts laughing hysterically and lays the gun on the bench. I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why. I asked him what was the matter and he just laughed harder. After several minutes of gut-busting laughter he turns to me, trying to have a serious look on his face, and tells me he doesn't know how to load the gun. It took about a second for him to start laughing hysterically again. It was one of those things that you had to be there to appreciate. Needless to say, he learned how to load, unload, and shoot the rifle that day. We were just talking about that yesterday and it brought on a good laugh once more. Anyway, he'll most likely hitch a ride with us. Having the one vehicle, he's not going to want to drive 100 miles up north for cooler waters. He'll either hang with us or do some salt water fishing, perhaps a day of each. I'll probably rent a mini-van or SUV for the trip. I'm not taking a chance on my rust bucket van to make a 5-hour trip. It's seen too many hard miles for that and I don't want to take my wife's car since she'll be left with the kids and the rust bucket. When I mentioned taking her car I got one of those, "don't even think about it" looks. Not a good sign. So who else is up for this trip? I realize it's early in the game, but it doesn't hurt to start making plans. ------------------ [Edited 1 time by Greg on 01-09-2006 at 10:31 PM]

Dover Days Inn is <15 Mins from the Club. Your travel plans sound pretty good. You won't be traveling within 50 miles of Boston, so don't worry about "rush hour".When the plans of "RLB Stock" 2006 are firm, maybe a e-mail announcement from RB to every member could be sent? Things to do when visting around here...... There is shopping at the nearby malls in NH, no sales tax! http://www.islesofshoals.com/ site seeing harbor cruises, AKA floating bar! http://www.algauron.com/ deep sea fishing http://www.llbean.com/ about 1 hour away, (yuppie shopping, bring your Volvo) http://www.kitterytradingpost.com/ not to be missed! GOOD Gun store with lots of outdoor stuff 15mins from the Club Things to see...... http://www.nubblelight.com/nubblelighthistory.html 20 mins from the Club http://www.yorkbeachmaine.com/ go to the beach! 20 mins from the Club Places to eat....... http://www.weathervaneseafoods.com/ right acrossed from Kittery Trading Post! Good food, good prices. There's even one in Dover, NH (often less crowded) Lobster feed on Saturday at the Club! I know fisherman and will get the freshest Lobster available! Lobster, steamed clams, corn on the cob, salads, frothy adult beverages (after the guns are put away) for something like ~$25 a person (at cost) ~Clayt

Hmmm, 4369 registered members, of which 3960 have their email setting to accept announcement email's from me. That's a lot of email! This far in advance I can't see why setting it for August 5th and 6th wouldn't work now. quote: Lobster feed on Saturday at the Club! I know fisherman and will get the freshest Lobster available! How far do you live from Stephen King? Okay, is Aug 5 & 6th writ in stone??? Any time is fine but as an old retired fart, I have so many social calls on my time (tee hee) that I like to plan ahead. You know, make sure my other pair of drawers are clean. See if I can remember where my toothbrush is. See if I can remember where my teeth are and such. I'm only missing one tooth, amd only have immediate plane for losing one more anytime soon.In my defense, my mouth has had too many teeth since a kid anyhoo, and they are rear molars and you cant detect when i smile anyways. Someone flip a coin so we know whether ME or ROB is the one allowed to come to this function. PS - I think Stephen King lives in or near Bangor. The place with the big cast iron gate. If youre in the area and see an older guy walking along the road, don't run him over. This happened once before and the guys either still in jail, or just getting out. Hiw wife owns a coffee shop grease spoon in town somewheres; dont make fun of him in case its her place. And dont run the poor guy over; the authorities take a dim view of that up there since it happened once already. ------------------ IMR4895 is a crowd pleaser!

I don't know the exact the gun laws in Massachusetts, but my father in-law has told me in the past that they are pretty harsh. Tranportation of handguns are definite no-no, unless you have a State of Massachusetts permit to do so. Long guns are okay as long as you have a permit or a hunting license from your state of residence. If you drive though that state be very careful.

Chris, That info is about 20 years old. You can pass through with an unloaded, cased and locked firearm, which is not in the immediate reach of the passengers. Ammo must be separated from the firearm as well. You are headed to an organized meeting and have a lawful purpose to be transporting your firearm through MA. I’m not giving legal advice, so it’s up to you…….. Here is a cut and paste from www.packing.org
Peaceable journey law summary Date updated: Aug 26, 2005 @ 9:24 pm Chapter 140: Section 131G Carrying of firearms by non-residents; conditions Section 131G. Any person who is not a resident of the commonwealth may carry a pistol or revolver in or through the commonwealth for the purpose of taking part in a pistol or revolver competition or attending any meeting or exhibition of any organized group of firearm collectors or for the purpose of hunting; provided, that such person is a resident of the United States and has a permit or license to carry firearms issued under the laws of any state, district or territory thereof which has licensing requirements which prohibit the issuance of permits or licenses to persons who have been convicted of a felony or who have been convicted of the unlawful use, possession or sale of narcotic or harmful drugs; provided, further, that in the case of a person traveling in or through the commonwealth for the purpose of hunting, he has on his person a hunting or sporting license issued by the commonwealth or by the state of his destination. Police officers and other peace officers of any state, territory or jurisdiction within the United States duly authorized to possess firearms by the laws thereof shall, for the purposes of this section, be deemed to have a permit or license to carry firearms as described in this section ~Clayt

Beeman, Pack your clean drawers, toothbrush and teeth and we'll meet you there! Sed, I don't see any problems if both you and Rob go as long as you're not left unattended for any lengthy period of time. Oh, and kindly leave the nipple dance in PA. LOL Clayt, I'm fine with any of the weekends in August. I was just talking to speedbump and he sounded interested in this too, but he has to check his work and Camp Perry schedule. One of these days he'll get his computer and connection working right. If this has to be moved to another weekend in August, that's OK too. As long as we agree on a set date shortly so others who want to go can make plans around this date. Now, regarding Maine handgun laws, are you familiar with them? There wasn't much on the packing.org web site regarding this, at least not that I found. I sent an email to one of the Maine handgun issuing license offices and hope to get a positive reply. I know I can leave NY with my handguns as long as I'm headed to a sanctioned or organized event. Once I leave NY, the handguns would have to be locked up, and separated from the ammunition. I'll be passing through Connecticut and Massachusetts, shooting in Maine, and staying overnight in New Hampshire. It might be easier to just leave the handguns home. ------------------
