HI HOTDOG I'm shooting out of 12" contender bull barrel. I don't like the way it smokes up all the way down on the shoulder I really like clays but haven't found a reduced load for 223 yet useing H Clays yet??? BUT I'm open for anything I loaded 14gr blue dot and it acted right, but I really want a lighter load[This message has been edited by BIGED717 (edited 04-07-2002).]

They only thing that I would have to say about a reduced load for a .223 is WHY Load More Shoot More Often

I have been using 12.0 grains of IMR SR4759. It gives about 2100 fps out of my T/C super 14. Not really a good load to cycle an gas operated auto AR, Mini etc. Hornady's manual of about 20+ yaers ago listed this load.

Sorry, I just wondered as I used to shoot a XP100 in 223 and loved it because the recoil was so light. Load More To Shoot More Often

Hi Big Ed: Is your first post correct in that you used only 4 grains of Bluedot? That is much too light a charge with that slow a burning powder. It can work well but not loaded that light. The powder that has most often been used to get very light loads in medium sized cases is Unique. It is used a lot by cast bullet shooters who want to keep velocity low. Be careful as with very small charges it is possible to double charge a case. Even though it still doesn't seem like much powder, pressures would be sky high and dangerous. I have shot a lot of Unique with cast loads in .308 Win, 257 Rbts, .303 Savage with good results.

HI gregg yes your right it is too light, won't expand enough to seal the neck off I even annealed the case neck I think I can safely double the load too 8 grs as I have shot 14grs blue dot IT worked good.HAS anybody tried H Benchmark powder for 223 they reccomend about 27grs for 3200 fps what about 1/2 that for a light load am I gonna BLOW my head off???

Big EdPost back if you find a load you like. I am also looking for a good reduced load. I have been dinking around with blue dot a little bit. I also thought about Unique. Would this be way too messy? McKendo

It is not a good idea to just reduce the normal charge weight of the normal powder by half to get a reduced load. It just doesn't work well and could even be dangerous by causing hang fires, etc. The most you usually want to back off the normal powder is about a third. The velocity you mention in the original post would be even less then a reduced load and more like a "squib" load. In the .223 the Blue Dot and 2400 powder would be good for reduced loads (still over 2000 pfs) but not for the real light loads you seek as they are still too slow. Unique might be your best bet. One other thing to consider is that you don't try to load jacketed bullets at too slow a velocity as they can stick in the bore. If you then shoot another one behind it, Bad News! Hope this helps, Gregg535

Big Ed,I couldn't understand for sure what you meant by "NASTYYYY". Did it mean you were very happy with those loads or that they burned very dirty, or??? Gregg535
